Those pesky Romans

Page history last edited by Rob Brennan 13 years, 4 months ago

Had a cracking game last night, Sasanid Persian vs Early Byzantine 530AD.

I ran the Sasanids and Mr Lord Mather ran the Byzantines. Game size was 400AP.

Deployment dice had the Byzantines invading. Terrain chosen was just two 2FE
gentle hills, one from both of us. They both ended up on my side of the table
and played no part in the game at all.

I chose to model my force on an all mounted army and my list was as follows-

C-in-C Irreg Cv(S)
Asavaran Irreg Cv(S) x 11

Sub-Gen Irreg Cv(S)
Asavaran Irreg Cv(S) x 11
Nomad Horse Archers Irreg Lh(F) X 4

Sub-Gen Irreg Cv(S)
Asavaran Irreg Cv(S) x 11
Nomad Horse Archers Irreg Lh(F) X 4

Baggage Irreg Bge(F) x 6

The time of day was 9am and I deployed first.

I deployed in each Sub-Gens command either side of the C-in-C's which was in the
centre. They deployed in one long line 240p from the centre of the table, the
line of Asavaran stretched right between the 800p side zones, with each command
having to put 3 x Cv(S) behind each command and then the Sub-Gens deployed the
Lh(F) into the 800p zone.

Dave looked astonished at the mass of cavalry facing him!

He deployed a Hunnic Ally-Gen and a group of Huns to his left, a mixed group of
Cv(S) and Kn(F) commanded by a non-Brilliant Belisarious next to the Huns, his
infantry in column to right of the mixed cav/knight group, the bulk of his
Regular Lh(S) to the right of the infantry and four Lh(S) out in the 800p zone
on his right.

The first bound was mine, and I just rolled that line straight forward! Dave had
deployed the infantry and mixed mounted command just enough back to allow me to
make two march moves, putting his mixed mounted command, Huns and Lh(S) on his
right all in a position to hit me in his bound!

Dave hit my right wing command with his mixed mounted command and the Huns,
whilst electing to run his right hand Lh(S) group in a column past my Lh(F).

This turned out to be a mistake.

The mixed mounted command and Huns failed to take out any of my right hand
command elements!

From here on a battle royal developed on my right where I not only broke the
mixed mounted command, but also destroyed Belisarious in the process! However,
in the process I lost that commands Sub-Gen, and whilst every element in
Belisarious command was eventually destroyed, the right hand command fell under
the ferocity of the Huns onslaught and became broken itself.

Meanwhile, on my left, the four nomads flung themselves into the Lh(S) and after
several bounds of combat completely destroyed them, only losing two nomads in
the process!

Things began to look grim for Belisarious' army, and for the first time I saw
the glimmer of defeat in Dave's eye!

Unfortunately things started going wrong for Sasanids at this stage as the
C-in-C's command tangled with the Lh(S) and got mugged by some hard flanking
Blades!

The race was on to see who could take out the other first. I managed to
dishearten the Lh(S) command, then the C-in-C's command became disheartened, and
in one last crucial bound I rolled a 1 for the left hand commands pips, and a 2
for the C-in-C's, forcing me to rear end the naughty Blades who had done the
same to another of my elements, I killed it but it was too late, the Huns had
arrived and they managed to rear end and kill four elements of Cv(S), which when
added to the four already destroyed, easily broke that command.

Game Over.

Final score tally was 18-7 to Dave.

Things of note-

We both forgot that Cv(S) vs Cv(S) fights do not take into account gradings (had
no impact in the game as it goes)

Lh(F) are tough mothers!

Sasanids are fun to play, even the Irregular variant!
