Urartian vs Constantius' Late Romans

Page history last edited by Rob Brennan 15 years, 8 months ago

As the best Roman is an inert Roman, we played a game last week - it was supposed to be book 1, but my Hittite opponent was not able to make it, so Tony Dennis stepped into the breach.

The Urartians were orgainised as follows:

CinC Reg Kn O, 2 LH I Scouts, 10 Ax O, 2 Ps O, 7 Reg Kn O, 2 SpS, 1 Reg Ps O, 6 Irr Cv O, 2 Bg I.

Urartian AG. Reg Kn O, 1 LH I, 10 Ax O, 4 Ps O, 2 Cv O, 2 Bg I

Musasirian AG. (Irr Cv O ) 1 Irr Kn O, 3 LH S, 6 Ax O, 4 Ps O, 2 Bg I

Cimmerian AG (LH F) 8 LH F

Vs

Late Romans:

CinC,Cv O, 3 Kn X, some Ps - this was strictly illegal, beacuse Tony had attached the army baggage to this command, to make it 'positive'

5 Bg O, 1 Art O in defended camp.

SG Cv O, 12 Bd O, 2 Bw O, 6 Ax S, 3 Ps O, 4 Ax S, 2 Ps O

Sg, 5 Cv O,4 LH o, 2 Lh F, 4 Ax O, 2 Ps O

Armenian AG Kn X, 2 Kn X, 4 Ax O, 4 Bw I, 4 LH F

Is Zero a positive number by the way?

I invaded and then managed to deploy 1st - 2 out of 3 times I've invaded this has happened, so I'm learning how to cope!

Terrain was a WH on my left flank,1 WH over there as well, in front of my deployment zone. There was a gentle hill at the rear of my zone. The other significant one was a wood on the front right of my deployment.

I deployed the Kn chariots in a line, with the CinC in the middle.

They were flanked by Cv O and had the 2 LH as supports. Other troops were left as reserves.

The AG was on the left flank, with the Cv O, and the other troops in reserve on the GH.

The Musasirians were on the right flank, again the AG + Kn flanking the CinC, the foot heading towards the wood, the LH as far on the flank as possible.

Tony pulled a delayed start, as he deployed the big command opposite my Kn + Cv, the Cv command opposite the CinC's flanking Cv and Musasir, and the Armenians on a flank march on my left.

The game unfolded with me sending the Kn straight forward. The allies tried to keep up on either flank, and te Cimmerian mercenary AG obviously hadn't been paid enough, as they didn't arrive until round 6.

Tony's Armenians arrived on the 1st die roll, so at least I knew where they were arriving, and had time to adjust, sort of. This meant I still sent the AG forward as a flank guard of the CinC, and tried to face off the Armenians on the hill. Fortunately their dice were bad, and I got the CinC in before they hit the Ax.

I then discovered that having a QK is great, but when it's 4-6, it is tough to break through. The 2 Bw shot Cv away that stood in front of them, which slowed me up, but fortunately, Tony kept on recoiling that flanked Kn, so he guarded the flank. My CinC got in at the end of the overlapped line, some Kn facing Cv, so it looked good, but took a long time to break through.

Fortunately the Musasirian LH S leapt on some Roman LH, and beat them, due to good dice. We were both rolling similar dice, i.e. both high or both low, but I got it in the right places (Except when the reserve Ax 6-1'd the Ally Kn element) It was more a grind than a stunning charge, but the Kn O gradually wittled away the Roman foot, and the extra casualties on LH etc just swung it my way, when a few of the Cv bit the dust.

The Ax O on the hill were just speed bumps to the Kn X, so that command was eventually lost, and we'd run out of time, but the last bound just saw enough Roman casualties to swing it my way.

The Cimmerians contributed by turning up, and attacking the camp to nil effect, and flanking some LH, befor I'd lost a command, so that was good!

I can see how the Burgundian Kn O are key to that army, especially en masse, 17 elements would be great!

Another enjoyable game, which with different dice would easily have been a nail-biter.

The question of are opponents TZ'd if they have recoiled a chariot sprung up again. This has got to be clarified if it hasn't been already. Obviously, chariots have a disadvantage if recoiled of not TZ'ing the 2nd rank, but what about the 1st?

It was good that an army entirely of AG was o.k., and that inert doesn't mean everything, as the Romans had to be deep to stand up to chariots. Tony would need to change the organisation to benefit the inert part, but this was the 1st outing for such an army choice.
