My army had the generals as irrCv(S) and the rest of the army was

irr apart from the reg Cv(S).

c-in-c's command - himself, 3 Kn(O), 4 Cv(S), 1 Cv(O). 1 LH(i), 6 Ax

(O). 5 Ps(O). 11 Ps(i)

SG mounted command - himself. 4 Kn(O). 3 Cv(S)

SG mixed command - himself, 5 Cv(S). 6 Ax(O). 6 Ps(O), 4 Ps(i)

army baggage - 4 Bg(O)

AG - himself. 4 Cv(S). 6 Ps(O), 10 Ps(i), 2 Bg(O)

Game 1 v Keith Nathan's Seleucid

From left to right i had my gallant AG, mixed SG with his infantry in

difficult terrain, then the c-in-c then the SG mounted. From his left

to right, keith had a SG with Ax, Bd and Bw then his c-in-c with Kn

(F). Kn(X)/ mixed LH and scythed chariots then his pike command with

flanking Ps. My AG announced on turn 1 that he would hold his

position until death (yup, rolled a 1 and later on ignored a bribe

attempt). My aim was to try to flank the phalanx, stripping its

supports before attacking it. My Cv(S) skirmished with his scythed

chariots, slowly kiiling them. Keith pulled his right over on the

assumption that my AG would remain unreliable. The turning point was

when a Cv killed and a chariot and this left open the flank of a Kn

(f) which turned out to be his c-in-c who got killed which really

hampered his command structure. I broke that command which left his

pike exposed and I ground out a 23-2 win.

Game 2 - Richard Gale's( over from France) Tulunid or Ikshidid

This game revolved round an area of RF in the centre. I had the mixed

Sg on my left with the c-in-c and other SG in the centre ( to the

right if the RF) with the AG on my right. Richard deployed

defensively so that he could use his regular mobility to counter my

numbers. I defended on my left while attacking on the right and

Richard mirrored this. He got my left and i got his right but we ran

out of time (in a fast gane) to get a decisive result. I got a 15-10

as I had inflicted more casualties on a smaller arny.

Game 3 - Stuart's Central Asian Turks

Stuart has already described this game and his report was accurate

(apart from getting my name wrong - illiterate Turks). Basically his

LH charged down the throat of my army ,killing my Knights and

breaking my mounted cmommand before I could counterattack and beat up

his commands. I got back into the game, breaking one of his commands

and disheartening another but he had disheartended my c-in-c. Finally

he got my c-in-c though if I had rolled up, next turnI would probably

have got the 1 element to break his army. 10-15#

Game 4 - Bill Skinner's Early Tang

On his right Bill had his c-in-c with Cv(S) and LH(S) then 2

identical command with Bw(X)/Bw(O), Cv(S)/(O), LH(F) and Ps. Ihad my

Ag on the left then my c-in-c then my mounted Sg then my mixed SG.

My plan was to go for both flanks while ignoring the centre with

those nasty Bw. This worked well though initially in the fight

against his c-in-c my dice were atrocious and I lost 6 chariots

(12ME) against Bill.s loss of 2 elements. Then Bill's dice were

equally bad b ut his losses were all from 1 command so I broke his c-

in-c and got away from hios Bw before they could kill more than 1

element (both the AG and c-in-c were 0.5 from being disheartend. On

the other flank the Ax chased off his Ps which meant that the Kn were

at an advantage against his Cv and i broke another command for a 23-2.

Game 5 - Jeavon Hood's Visigoths

This game got off to a late start as Jeavon had not set his alarm and

had to be woken by a phone call but in the game we had a maasive head

on crah between his Wb and my Cv. I had the infantry of my mixed

command in a wood and they held off his Wb, killing some but more

importnatly allowing some of them to get onto the flanke of his Wb in

the battle in the centre. Eventually my tired chariots had killed

enough to break his army for a 25-0

Game 6 - Donal's Neo Babylonians

Oh oy - lots of Kn(S0 and Bw(X)/(O)

I tried to use my superioriy in light troops in conjunction with

terrain to break up his attacks while sending my combined Kn force to

try to break thru one set of Bw. Donal used his brilliant general to

double pips twice to a 12 and a 10(or 12) to get his kn into my Cv.

There was alot of maneouvre and Donal brought as small command too

far forward and I turned on it and was able to brak it for a 15-10 to

get second place after Stuart totally annihilated his opponent to

shoot past Donal and myself

Conclusion - play the game and go to

Roll Call, Warfare and Schiltron ( and othe rcompetitions in 2009
