BHGS Challenge 2008 Game 1 vs Chris Robinson's Mongol conquest
see the 2 81 Sub-Roman British for Tims list
A game best passed over quickly. Our first mistake came when we
discovered that we had invaded Mongolia. Our next mistake was to have
some terrain – in retrospect, a lack of any terrain would have
encouraged me simply to line up in a big mass and sweep forward.
Instead, offered a couple of steep hills on either side of our
deployment area, I deployed the Irr Sp(I) between them and aimed
Urien's cavalry up our left flank, to meet up with Rhyderch's troops
who we had sent on a flank march on that side.
Chris deployed very little – a command of 10 Mongol Reg LH(S) and Reg
Cv(S) anti-marching general wide on the right, and the CinC (Subodai,
Brilliant) on the left, leading a mix of Reg Cv(S) and Reg LH(S). He
also had a small regular Bge(F) command. His third fighting command
was also flank-marching, I assumed on the left as that was where Chris
had his CinC's troops
Gwallawc wasn't interested in joining in this battle (unreliable) and
Urien's furious threats absorbed important time, preventing the Rheged
cavalry from deploying round to meet the smaller numbers of Mongolian
Reg Cv(S) as quickly as we might have liked. With no threat on the
right, Chris's right-hand LH(S) redeployed over to the left. When
Chris's outflanking command (General + 9 Khitan nobles, all Reg Cv(S))
discovered the much larger Strathclyde force coming the other way they
were driven on ahead of Rhydderch's troops, but being well trained
they turned and instantly attacked. The dice were unkind to Rhydderch
and his men fled instantly. Elsewhere, battle had been joined on our
left flank between Urien and the Mongol nobles but again the dice
provided a swift and one-sided result. A few (very few) Mongols were
dragged from their horses but the end result was a one-sided 23-2 to
Chris.
