Elements contacted both to Rear and Flank

 1. Turning to Face Flank Contact on More Than One Element Combined with Rear Contact

 

Given two moves by two elements (X and Y) contacting a group of at least two elements (A and B) behind one another as per the first diagram below (Y moved into the rear of B and X moved into the flank of both A and B), how do they respond to the contact?

 

 

To resolve this situation means that the rules on rear contacts and flank contacts must be reconciled. The consensus is that B remains in place and must fight a combat in which a recoil will destroy B and that A must respond to the flank contact and hence X is moved back to make room. A will fight this combat at -1 since it is in contact with a friendly element which prevents A recoiling. The diagram below illustrates the situation after turning to face the contacts:
